17th International Congress of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS/SIEDS)
Venue: University of Zaragoza, Spain
12–16 July 2027
From 12 to 16 July 2027, the University of Zaragoza will host the 17th Congress of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS in English; SIEDS in French). This is the largest international scholarly gathering devoted to the study of the “long” eighteenth century in all its academic dimensions. Since 1963, sixteen congresses have been held, most recently in Graz (2011), Rotterdam (2015), Edinburgh (2019), and Rome (2023).
This will be the first time that the prestigious quadrennial ISECS/SIEDS Congress — one of the leading international events in the Humanities and Social Sciences — has been held in Spain. The Congress traditionally attracts around one thousand participants from across the world.
Although the Society’s principal working languages are English and French, Spanish has been accepted as an official language of the Congress for all scientific, cultural, and social activities.
The general theme of the Zaragoza 2027 Congress is “Enlightenment and (In)Equality.” In keeping with the Society’s established practice, however, proposals addressing any aspect of the study of the “long” eighteenth century (1670-1830) are also welcome. Contributions may engage with any relevant academic discipline, including all branches of history, as well as law, philosophy, economics, art history, literature, political thought, and related fields.
The Spanish-speaking scholarly community is therefore warmly invited to submit proposals in Spanish for thematic sessions, round tables, individual papers, and, in the case of early-career scholars, poster presentations. All forms of participation are open to approaches grounded in the Digital Humanities.
Further information about both the Zaragoza Congress and the Teruel Seminar can be found on the official website, which is now available at www.isecs-zaragoza2027.net You may also follow the event on Facebook (isecszaragoza2027).
