Pulp Fiction 4
Venue: Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel
Hosted by the Department of Comparative Literature
30 March 2027
This year's fourth academic Pulp Fiction conference will examine the mechanisms, formulas, and technologies that shape popular and commercial literature. It will do so across the thriller, the romance novel, science fiction and fantasy, children's and young adult literature, comics, horror, digital poetry, and more.
We invite researchers to examine the world of popular literature through three central axes:
• Literary patterns and their subversion: identifying the fixed structures, archetypes, and conventions that drive the various genres, and, conversely, the ways in which writers depart from familiar formulas, break expectations, and challenge convention.
• Media, AI, and Popular Literature: Writing, Reading, Influence. We welcome proposals addressing how the emergence of language models is reshaping literary writing and criticism, what role social media plays in shaping the reading habits of adolescents and adults, and whether audiobook consumption functions as a substitute for or a complement to print reading.
• Science and Research in Popular Literature: Do the Two Converge? How are accelerating scientific developments and innovations reflected in popular literature, and is there room for hybrid works that bring science and popular fiction into dialogue?
Conference committee: Dr. Efrat Kaminer, Dr. Anat Koplowitz-Breier, Dr. Yaakov Mascetti, Dr. Lili Glazner
